Dear Friends of NAMI Mercer,
Some years ago, my studious and obedient child began cutting herself. As a young, single parent, I was alarmed and confused, but it was the look in my daughter's eyes that frightened me the most--the same look of hopelessness and despair that I had seen on my mother's face shortly before she died by suicide 20 years earlier. Fortunately I had the insight and determination to get my very vulnerable child into therapy, where I learned that she was struggling with anxiety disorder and chronic depression.
At a group therapy meeting, a fellow parent introduced me to NAMI Mercer, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The largest grass-roots mental health organization in the country, NAMI provides education and support for individuals and families affected by mental illness and advocates for lives of quality, free from stigma and discrimination.
Today, I am a NAMI Mercer Board officer, a facilitator for NAMI's signature Family to Family education program, co-chair of the Programs and Services Committee, and leader of team captains for the 2013 NAMIWalk. All of my volunteer efforts are driven by my beliefs that no one should have to shoulder the challenges of mental illness alone and that there is always hope for recovery.
If you believe in NAMI Mercer's mission, please become a member.
