Capitols.Contact Your Legislators

NAMI Mercer encourages you to contact your elected officials to share your thoughts on proposed legislation, current events, and government policy. Members of Congress do pay attention to constituent telephone calls and mail.

Concise and direct phone conversations and well-written letters are two of the most effective ways you can influence your law-makers. Bear in mind, however, that members of Congress get hundreds of telephone calls, letters, and emails every day. Here are some suggestions to effectively convey your message.

GENERAL METHODS OF CONTACT

To communicate effectively by telephone:

  • Ask to speak to the aide who handles the issue about which you wish to comment.
  • Identify yourself and where you live.
  • State your support or opposition to a specific bill (S.___ or H.R. ___).
  • You may ask your legislator’s position on the bill.
  • Briefly state the reasons for your position.
  • You may request a written response to your telephone call.

To communicate effectively in writing:

  • State your purpose in the first paragraph.
  • A personal letter is more effective than a “canned” letter.
  • If your letter pertains to a specific piece of legislation, identify it as House bill: H.R.___ or Senate bill: S.___.
  • Address only one issue in each letter.
  • Use examples to support your position.
  • Be succinct; keep the letter to one page.
  • Be courteous.
